Start in the market town
Braintree is an Essex market town with a centre made for a wander between shops, a stop for something to eat and a look at its local history. Market Place, Great Square, High Street and Bank Street form the setting for the traditional weekly market.
The Town Hall is a useful landmark in the centre. Its rooms, murals and public events are part of the town's civic life; the venue's website is the place to check what is on.
Bocking and the story of textiles
Braintree and Bocking's history is closely tied to textiles. Courtaulds and Warner & Sons helped shape the area through manufacturing, design and the buildings they left behind. Braintree Museum tells the local story, including displays drawn from the Warner Textile Archive.
In Bocking, the white post mill on Church Street offers another link with working life in earlier centuries. Bocking Windmill opens on selected days and for arranged visits, so check before setting out rather than assuming it is open every day.
Witham, Halstead and Coggeshall
The directory reaches beyond Braintree itself. Witham offers a River Walk and Whetmead Nature Reserve; Halstead has public gardens close to its town centre. Coggeshall is a place to explore the area's older cloth-trade heritage at Paycocke's House and Garden and the medieval Grange Barn.
Use each town's directory page when you want somewhere to eat, a local shop or a service nearby. The towns have their own identities, so choosing an area gives a more useful starting point than treating the whole district as one place.
The villages around Braintree
Great Notley, Silver End, Earls Colne, Rayne, Felsted and Gosfield are also covered. You can browse businesses based in each place, alongside businesses marked as serving the whole district.
Silver End has a particularly distinctive story: it was created as a model village for Crittall workers, with modernist architecture that reflects the window manufacturer's influence. Rayne is a useful starting point for a walk along the former railway route of the Flitch Way.
Planning a visit
Braintree has a rail connection with Witham. Check Greater Anglia's journey planner for your date, including onward connections and any engineering work. For trips between villages, plan the return journey as well as the outward one.
Build a visit around one area rather than trying to fit the whole directory into a day. A town-centre stop, a local attraction and a nearby cafe make a good place to start.
