Discover Braintree Museum and Bocking Windmill

Start at Braintree Museum on Manor Street for the people, industries and ideas behind the town. Its Warner & Sons displays give textiles and design a local setting rather than leaving them as names on old buildings.

For a different kind of heritage visit, look for an open day at Bocking Windmill. It retains historic milling machinery, but it is not a working mill. Use the visitor information to check access and arrangements for your group.

Explore Cressing Temple Barns

Between Braintree and Witham, Cressing Temple brings together the medieval Barley and Wheat Barns and a recreated Tudor walled garden. The great timber buildings are a reminder of the estate's connections with the Knights Templar.

Take time to look at the carpentry as well as the gardens. Check Explore Essex before visiting for access, events and any conservation work that may affect what you can see.

Get outdoors at Great Notley

Great Notley Country Park is a choice for a family outing, with a play trail, open spaces, lakes and paths. Sky Ropes offers a separate activity for visitors who want something more adventurous.

Choose your route and activities around your group. The park's official page has current information about facilities, accessibility, parking and activity bookings.

Follow the Flitch Way from Rayne

The Flitch Way follows a former railway through the Essex countryside. Rayne's old station is one of its landmarks, making it a natural place to start a shorter walk or cycle rather than attempting the whole route.

Check the route map and any access notices before travelling. Leave time for a stop in Rayne and use the directory to find nearby food, drink and services.

Make a heritage stop in Coggeshall

Paycocke's House and Garden shows the wealth and craftsmanship of the cloth trade through its carved timber frontage and interiors. Grange Barn, also cared for by the National Trust, is a surviving medieval monastic barn.

The two places have their own visiting arrangements. Check both before building a day around them, then add a stop at a local business in Coggeshall.

Find a quieter stop in Witham, Halstead or Silver End

Witham's River Walk and Whetmead Nature Reserve offer an outdoor alternative to a shopping trip. In Halstead, the public gardens are within a short walk of the centre, with places to sit and enjoy the planting.

Silver End's Memorial Gardens offer another green space, while the village's architecture adds a different chapter to the area's industrial story. Check the relevant visitor pages for opening and access information.
