Which council should I contact?

Braintree District Council is the starting point for local planning, bin collections, housing and council tax in its district. Essex County Council handles county services including roads, schools and adult and children's social care.

Use the council's own service pages for a report or application. They give the current process and direct an enquiry to the appropriate team.

Town and parish councils around the district

Witham and Halstead have town councils. Places including Coggeshall, Great Notley, Silver End, Earls Colne, Rayne and Gosfield have parish councils. The district council's directory links to their contact details and information.

Braintree Town Hall is an events and room-hire venue; it is not the district council's customer service office. For a council service in Braintree or Bocking, start with the district council rather than assuming the Town Hall handles it. Directory coverage also includes Felsted: use a postcode to confirm the responsible council when an address is near a district boundary.

Book a hall or find a community venue

The district's public halls and venues directory includes Bocking Village Hall, Braintree Community Centre, Coggeshall Village Hall and other local spaces. Braintree Town Hall also offers rooms for meetings, events and celebrations.

Contact a venue directly to ask about capacity, step-free access, kitchens, parking and hire terms. A council or directory entry helps you find the venue; the hall's own booking team confirms availability.

Libraries, activities and local information

Essex Libraries is the place to find your nearest library, current opening hours and activities. Use the individual branch page when planning a visit rather than relying on an old timetable.

For sport, parks and other activities, the district council's leisure pages bring together information for Braintree, Witham, Halstead and surrounding places. The directory can help you find local clubs, groups and businesses alongside those public services.

Keep local information useful

If you run a local group or venue, add it to the directory so people can find its website and contact details. If a guide needs correcting, send us the page and a link to the current information through the contact form.

Check opening times, admission arrangements and access with the organisation before making a special trip. Official links throughout these guides take you to the people who manage each place.
